SWMS Mission

Founded in 1998, Sam Whitmore’s Media Survey (SWMS) produces research and analysis that helps tech PR pros pitch more effectively.

SWMS interviews business and technology editors and publishes their advice and commentary. We also analyze published work and deliver insights that help tech PR pros land coverage today and build relationships for the long run.

Our content is available 24/7 on the SWMS website for paid subscribers only. It comprises:

Research — cheat sheets with reporter names, contact info, and links to recent work

Interviews — with journalists and other influencers in the world of earned media

Strategies — fresh approaches to achieve pitch success, including new and “side door” pitch opps

Subscribers also receive email newsletters on a regular basis.

SWMS Valet Consulting

As part of their SWMS subscription, subscribers can schedule confidential discussions with Sam Whitmore to brainstorm solutions for any tech PR challenge, through

email requests

informal discussions (1-to-1 or “1-to-team” on phone or Zoom)

formal presentations (to multiple teams or organization-wide)

SWMS valet consulting is currently included in all subscriptions at no additional cost.

Subscriber Content

All SWMS web and email content is copyrighted. Paid subscribers may forward our email newsletters to colleagues at other organizations, but may not share their login credentials. Redistribution of web content — including screenshots, copy-and-paste excerpts, and PDFs — is prohibited.

Valet Research & Cheat Sheets

When a subscriber uses our valet consulting service to request a custom list of media targets, we may later publish that list as a cheat sheet for all subscribers. The requesting subscriber always receives the list first with a reasonable head start before it goes live on the site.

Privacy Policy

What We Collect

SWMS collects only the following information:

  • Login cookies so subscribers can stay signed in across sessions.
  • Web analytics via Google Analytics, which generates no personally identifiable information.
  • Email addresses, stored in a password-protected Mailchimp account and used solely to send our newsletters. We do not share subscriber email addresses with anyone.
  • Email engagement data including open rates and link clicks, tracked through Mailchimp. This data is kept confidential.
  • IP addresses used to access our website. This information is kept private within SWMS.

What We Don't Do

We do not sell, share, or distribute any subscriber data to third parties.

Editorial Standards

All SWMS analysis adheres to our internal Analytical Framework, which governs everything we publish — including work that may be informed by the use of AI.
